We decided not to visit Regina, Saskatchewan, because we knew we had a long drive ahead the next day. Instead, we chose to relax at the hotel. Yesterday, we drove for about eight hours to Red Deer. Upon arriving at Paul and Judy’s place, we received the warmest welcome. We chatted with them and even met one of their friends, Mick, who is staying with them for a short while.

After a delicious supper, Judy showed us to our bedroom, which was incredibly comfortable. Martin and I each had our own bathrooms.

Following a good night’s rest, we took refreshing showers and enjoyed a hearty breakfast with our hosts. Judy had some work to finish, and once she returned, we got ready to head out towards Banff.

This was undoubtedly a highlight of our trip so far. The Rockies are beyond imagination until you see them in person. Lake Louise was absolutely breathtaking. We had a fantastic meal at the Fairmont before continuing to Canmore, a charming little town with lovely shops and restaurants. We stopped for dessert and coffee, where we were met with friendly smiles everywhere.

The majestic mountains remain part of the backdrop here—it’s simply stunning. Paul and Judy have more places they want to show us, and having such wonderful hosts guiding us makes the experience even better. We’re excited to see what tomorrow will bring, but today was truly unforgettable!

Nous avons décidé de ne pas visiter Regina, en Saskatchewan, car nous savions que nous aurions une longue route le lendemain. Nous avons donc choisi de nous détendre à l’hôtel. Hier, nous avons conduit environ huit heures jusqu’à Red Deer. En arrivant chez Paul et Judy, nous avons reçu le plus chaleureux des accueils. Nous avons discuté avec eux et rencontré l’un de leurs amis, Mick, qui séjourne chez eux pour un moment.

Après un délicieux souper, Judy nous a montré notre chambre, qui était incroyablement confortable. Martin et moi avions chacun notre propre salle de bain. Après une bonne nuit de sommeil, nous avons pris une douche rafraîchissante et dégusté un excellent petit-déjeuner avec nos hôtes. Judy avait un peu de travail à terminer, et une fois de retour, nous nous sommes préparés pour partir en direction de Banff.

C’était sans aucun doute l’un des moments forts de notre voyage jusqu’à présent. Les Rocheuses sont au-delà de toute imagination jusqu’à ce que vous les voyiez en personne. Le lac Louise était absolument époustouflant. Nous avons savouré un excellent repas au Fairmont avant de continuer vers Canmore, une charmante petite ville avec de jolies boutiques et restaurants. Nous nous sommes arrêtés pour un dessert et un café, où nous avons été accueillis avec des sourires chaleureux.

Les montagnes restent une toile de fond majestueuse ici — c’est tout simplement magnifique. Paul et Judy ont encore d’autres endroits qu’ils souhaitent nous faire découvrir, et avoir de si merveilleux hôtes pour nous guider rend l’expérience encore meilleure. Nous sommes impatients de voir ce que demain nous réserve, mais aujourd’hui était vraiment inoubliable !

May 11 & 12

Yesterday was a peaceful and heartwarming day spent enjoying the wonderful company of our hosts. Paul treated us to a delightful breakfast featuring French toast, sausage, bacon, fresh fruit, and, of course, maple syrup. It was a true feast!

Paul’s mother, Bernice, was my sister and also my godmother. She passed away several years ago, but I remember her as a beautiful person inside and out—loving and deeply devoted to her family. I have fond memories of visiting them in the United States years ago, where I was always impressed by how she spent quality time with her young children.

Much like his father, Omer, Paul is a calm, kind, loving, and honest man who works incredibly hard. I wouldn’t be surprised if, like his father, he continues working until he’s 80! As a highly respected carpenter and contractor in Red Deer, Alberta, he has built hundreds of homes here. His wife, Judy, is a real estate agent with a warm, outgoing personality and countless fascinating stories. We instantly felt at home with her. Judy is a generous soul who loves to entertain.

In the afternoon, they took us to Sylvan Lake, a beautiful resort community around a sparkling lake—a popular summer destination. It’s a perfect spot for them to escape and recharge from their busy work lives. We also visited another lake surrounded by camping facilities. They mentioned how incredibly crowded it will become in the coming month and throughout the summer.

For dinner, we enjoyed a meal at Earl’s restaurant in Red Deer, and the food was absolutely delicious! Highly recommended.

We had plans to visit Edmonton today and see a couple of friends there and also want to visit Drumheller, but I decided we need a day of rest. We’ll see if we’re up to it tomorrow.

Hier a été une journée paisible et réconfortante, passée à profiter de la merveilleuse compagnie de nos hôtes. Paul nous a régalés avec un délicieux petit-déjeuner composé de pain doré, de saucisses, de bacon, de fruits frais et, bien sûr, de sirop d’érable. Un véritable festin !

La mère de Paul, Bernice, était ma sœur et aussi ma marraine. Elle est décédée il y a plusieurs années, mais je me souviens d’elle comme d’une personne magnifique, à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur—aimante et profondément dévouée à sa famille. Je garde un souvenir précieux de mes visites chez eux aux États-Unis, où j’étais toujours impressionné par la qualité du temps qu’elle passait avec ses jeunes enfants.

Comme son père, Omer, Paul est un homme calme, gentil, aimant et honnête, qui travaille incroyablement dur. Je ne serais pas surprise que, tout comme son père, il continue de travailler jusqu’à 80 ans ! En tant que charpentier et entrepreneur très respecté à Red Deer, en Alberta, il a construit des centaines de maisons dans la région. Sa femme, Judy, est agente immobilière, avec une personnalité chaleureuse et extravertie, et des histoires fascinantes. Nous nous sommes immédiatement sentis chez nous avec elle. Judy est une âme généreuse qui aime recevoir.

Dans l’après-midi, ils nous ont emmenés à Sylvan Lake, une magnifique station balnéaire entourant un lac étincelant—une destination estivale prisée. C’est l’endroit idéal pour eux pour s’évader et se ressourcer loin du travail. Nous avons également visité un autre lac entouré d’installations de camping. Ils nous ont dit à quel point il deviendra incroyablement fréquenté dans les prochaines semaines et tout au long de l’été.

Pour le dîner, nous avons savouré un repas au restaurant Earl’s à Red Deer, et la nourriture était absolument délicieuse ! Je le recommande vivement.
